The rough draft will be completed during the next two weeks. A readable draft will need to be ready for the read-through by Jan 10th. That gives Dad and I about twenty days. Five weeks before the play is now officially called "Sniffles Week."
At this point we had lost several rehearsal days due to weather and sickness. Several actors had colds, two had chicken pox and one is scheduled for knee surgery and in the mean time has to limp around the stage.
On Monday, I went to Mark Phillips’s studio (Doctor Obvious Studios) to work on music and sound effects. We discussed the choices as well as specific order of the music.
All of it will be composed by Mark. After the play, all the tracks will be available on iTunes as the soundtrack for “The Pinocchio Project.” Mark came up with the idea of naming each song after appropriate sci-fi references in literature and movies.
There are 8 scenes in the play and at the start of this week, we had only blocked four of them.
By Saturday, we had blocked everything except the last few pages of the play.
Dad and are still tinkering with the ending.
On Saturday, we spent a great deal of time choreographing a crucial moment in the play. It was at that point we realized we might end up with a fairly creepy moment in the play that might be frightening to younger children.Bret Carterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07358057018626638406noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2371982964244769310.post-33562405851109841272012-01-27T18:54:00.000-08:002012-01-27T18:58:29.272-08:00THE TITLE OF THE HYLAND PLAY FOR 2012

THE PINOCCHIO PROJECT

University students use a dangerous invention to save their drama department.

MARCH 9th and 10thBret Carterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07358057018626638406noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2371982964244769310.post-35716016229820485442011-12-23T14:28:00.000-08:002011-12-25T16:16:26.082-08:00THE HYLAND PLAY 2012The Try-Out Scripts
(Dec 12-16)

Each year, we write four short try-out scripts.
These are intentionally vague and don’t necessarily reveal anything about the actual play. They are meant to test certain concepts and to look for ideas based on how the students perform them.
This year, the students jumped right in, trying different approaches and being very creative. They gave us several good ideas to use in the play.
These are the try-out scripts for this year.

A Question of Love
A: So you love me.
B: I do.
A: I’m sorry if I seem skeptical, but I’m (pause) skeptical. You’ve never indicated that you had any feelings for me.
B: I have feelings. For you. A lot of feelings.
A: Really?
B: Very much so.
A: Why do you love me?
B: Oh, you know—you’re just so (pause) loveable.
A: I don’t believe you. There’s something weird going on here.
B: Weird?
A: You don’t act like someone who is in love.
B: Do you want me to giggle and write poetry?
A: Not necessarily. But you could at least smile.
B: Okay. (smiling) There. How’s that?
A: Creepy.

The Interview
A: There’s just one last question.
B: Great.
A: If you get the job, how would you deal with unforeseen complications involving legal ramifications?
B: Um…what do you mean?
A: Complications involving such things as guidelines, regulations (pause) laws… How would you feel if it was necessary for you to bypass some of these things?
B: You mean (pause) do something (pause) illegal?
A: Not “illegal” necessarily. Let’s call it “blurry.”
B: “Blurry.”
A: Yes. What if you were required to do something “blurry.”
B: You mean “illegal”?
A: No! (pause) How would you feel about doing something that was a little “fuzzy” around the edges?
B: You mean “illegal”?
A: No! Just bending the system—just a little.
B: Oh! Now I understand! You mean (pause) illegal.

Interrogation
A: Apparently you left your country rather quickly.
B: Yes. I left quickly away from my land of being born.
A: Why did you leave so quickly?
B: For because I was on the airplane. It was going quickly.
A: No. I mean, why did you leave in such a hurry?
B: I was quickly hurrying for because the airplane was very soon about leaving. So I quickly ran throughout the airport.
A: I’m not making myself clear. (pause) Were you in some sort of trouble? Is that why you left your country in such a hurry?
B: Oh! Yes. I was very much not in trouble. No trouble.
A: No trouble?
B: Yes, there was trouble.
A: Was there or was there not trouble?
B: Yes. (pause) There was not any trouble expect yes.
A: You’re not making any sense.
B: Yes. I am not making trouble. I would like coffee. Would I have some coffee please? Is that the right word? Coffee? Java caffeine bean thank you please?

Demonstration
A: Are you ready?
B: I believe so.
A: Good. (pause) Remember, we’re looking for extremes.
B: Extremes. Got it.
A: (pause) Happiness.
B: What a wonderful morning! Look at the beautiful trees and
the birds and the sunrise! This is going to be a wonderful day!
A: All right. (pause) Sadness.
B: Gray light seeps through the grimy window. The birds twitch like trash caught in the wretched trees. I hate life.
A: Okay. (pause) Suspicion.
B: There’s something outside. The sun casts shadows wherein lurk the birds who stare from their perches. Staring…staring…
A: And finally…anger.
B: (long pause) After doing a lot of thinking, I have come to a significant conclusion concerning your mental state. (pause) You’re stupid.
A: Great.

On the Thursday before Christmas Break (Dec 15), we told the students the basic idea for the play and gave a brief description of what would happen in the first scene.Bret Carterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07358057018626638406noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2371982964244769310.post-27185148300704595952011-12-23T12:15:00.000-08:002011-12-23T14:15:36.620-08:00SENIOR PLAY 2011: HONOR AMONG THIEVES<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBL2laaguU_RtEZ_cIZJu-qDRhakv0oVy3souLCf35c01Iw6gwT7yfKplYkl4KbFOyn5DSRjWT_PrXRXRDWzgAJHOi6E-mvGfUWk4cMF9EPmz1e9thI9qcI7MIaPTdynkIEJhWsLHx-Dc/s320/TH1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689442806730537650" />
The Hyland Class of 2012 put on a great show on 11/11/11. Dad and I wrote “Honor Among Thieves” specifically for the seniors.
Last April, while the seniors of 2011 were on the Washington D.C. field trip, Briana Akins, Hannah Morton, Ben Oehlert, Caleb Oehlert, Aimee Vance and myself went to Barnes and Noble, got some coffee, and started brainstorming.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrUsYIsOsgzPUdZ64rTIdjVu5SzHFHHveVGklGPhEPByVJf50AklpBjcEFpDFN4URaKXrWQlVP6s1j-s56hmh0tLtcLv-iDcTXYnW0TbsrEdU0ldQyLKBMKYEumek65JsuCCONXsXSczI/s320/TH50.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689425551463152898" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGlXG0kC2fQMR9rREHaHCR_hjWt1OROt7-V1nkZhwhXmGY6bNfNxJ9emMocDlzKEKAJf6V_7_8YuW03A1jONxrVhy7yUk7-3v1L8VtOBcqfnkDP7yGO9WRY1Zry8O4ysOF7RykPVZ6Eqw/s320/TH51.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689425538084312898" />
Brainstorming included finding interesting titles, random phrases from books and doing a little eavesdropping. We then went back to the school and wrote all the various bits and pieces on the whiteboard, looking for anything that captured our interest. By the end of our meeting, we decided the play would be about a bunch of thieves all competing to steal the same thing. There was some discussion about each thief having their own particular style, but beyond that, the story was up in the air.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX7J60jFeT7bOP_KzUMgfq-Ejqh8nJvy14hy2rxReLNvKrYCJiGBAVW1MCQTM-LaQGRjPsFDXJt67ZJ4WACrf-29dBS8Ykza27Aajjvkx0xGdObG3d9mXmP76_7aOiD0d5T33huNgtzv0/s320/TH52.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689425535639420882" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSXtuCutpLyCFW4kjTMRmPlyotMpuV4FRyfeiuDlV3C5BPMZKZspsbj7v_-pM94WCVkmqL09W8P9eUXMDW-YSuyv45Y8cxxokUHFYQFRZpjbmOQNejPUIYXLaghf46JFnnyh2hVDyPIn8/s320/TH53.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689425530569199954" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJx39KRlwSFkt-LhSlYDDy-WLqp0ecOKd_I7AcEq0uj20Jxa2Xv894s6qzbTnc9ZS5_J7ygBxR3Bld9xt2_gTlsohvwzB1RMTF7t5-0OyuMRFC7y8Ri53FcrAI7EyKuko-92YnuNJ6Heo/s320/TH54.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689424833690212370" />
During the summer, Dad and I mulled the idea over and around August started trying to come up with a more specific approach. Scott showed up on a Saturday and spent a great deal of time building a frame to support a rope and then rigging up a system that allowed for a controlled descent.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfcrhV_p77pVimKqsW_xihefhgJVZMVgfbHOUXF2lPRkNHqJk_KOosFFf_Z4QgZ2YOWx4ag5CI5Z0TGMCqhC5mNHrx65LTtT6Iea4Ue9ZA5ACKQPn8fGhxHRDliyce9qTc9zUtlCb1naU/s320/TH34.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689434009141491698" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP592f0rljObE_c_LFeeD0rUmUyk0jG_QOxOSZq6W7h4fvVO7InJ4wmEgrMUN6NsT1pDELU7x36hfKsFsPoizVQdd1W3PE-hikKefiQa77qmRFrGbFWLTLhmpPl27ZL5NyjSR2gimlboc/s320/TH32.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689435645379943074" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio-mDa6JSQ6AljgKOXc4YsyARcYX-qQoGYLHjOzSa8eksDOdZ3gQb55kw3RN83aOiRtWu-EBCsWd4iH6WtnW1d56rYuAtjF6GGMdlTY9fnFrjXCxait5W4YrehF5u6-Wdr5IBfGb7zjAU/s320/TH31.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689435650922967554" />
There was another complication in connection with this stunt. Right after Hannah set foot on the stage, she was supposed to “shoot” Ben with a dart from a blowgun. The blowgun was a metal pipe and we were concerned that it might difficult for her to come down the rope with it. To solve the problem, we simply put the metal pipe on the floor (hidden). So we used some of the work Clark Woodfin built to seal off one of the stairways. This allowed Brittany to appear to come up out of the ventilation system. During the parts in which they approached the diamond, it was important they maintain an intensity, despite several stretches of silence. They improvised several lines in order to make the play work. I also warned them that since there were so many precarious elements in the play, to be ready to “fix” the moment and to not break character. On the night of the performance, when one of the mirrors fell, they proved themselves capable of holding the play together. No one broke character and it resulted in a Aimee’s famous line—“The vase dropped it. I didn’t drop it.” By the way, this got more laughs than any of the lines in the actual script.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_CRpkLit1VxZ33hHrJkisv0CsNM75aH_opLFTeSzxui4YLGBJdGNPsvmM-w_-m-27o1sQVQOJWPIRFc-54EiGXcC8kCuE9rejvrnUJEijsK-AmUmsTl-xn7ZKZkgYyt6v48a1PTzumM0/s320/TH24.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689436667000428498" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1-nF3QsNA-9-5cL2_0sDKPW8DTjiv_BK2-ztEu-nVsF2vT8jUWfbLImaPfTFMa2dC4S7zPszzIxDIaA0vcJMX__oQPaxNhUh7HxUq-wKwsjw_q6HtxOqrCddP_RuXBDvddPnKlC-kIG4/s320/TH23.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689436677061784322" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZtsLE5-pRMIsfnHFbfvS43ROcSIptZWofqy1RvC87n9bPUW3Ol2oKR1jmSTc9HNaveSAejskpxGU29LIXh4exYvKDzWUHT-IdB60UzrbPlDdw2ZL_jyhjpj4aLcEoz9lP50i4LSC90ts/s320/TH22.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689439031166725954" />
Mark Phillips let us use some of his own music (to be released soon on a DVD) for the credits and curtain call. It also turned out to draw the largest crowd we’ve ever had for a senior play. We had been doing a musical every three years, but schedules didn’t allow for that this time. Any decent musical would be impossible without Mark Phillips and he was just as busy as all of us. But Dad and I did discuss that it would be cool if we could have at least some music. I mentioned that we should definitely use Virginia Wittman’s voice before she graduated. I remembered her performance in Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch and how well she sang—in particular during the song “Scallawag.” Dad and I also discussed that Clark could play guitar.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN0TSay7UJd_HBh3VUUfUwgCT1eF9mRxznPUeb-b9pQc8utlWTsSViiaRo_fCStGwt-2_UtcDrX4ur51bCc57MZ7hAt1zrrw11NdarkhgDn67oXHQE3sROzZEzac58aWOO3fi-7O08TLM/s320/Tor1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688356002326897218" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTGFDRxGGDtqy_GfBAWGbMHnqKBp41Q1OSdLmz6TDlRiTtQfDhJEdt-JzPiYKceGEmum95O19bslGvI77fsf0P6l3T-SxWcAza9BgVxDDrouhmDIPknbdluglMKpaceN-RxAabVfP_qs/s320/Tor2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688355999774485122" />
We then tried to narrow down the possible time periods. Since last year’s Mr. Nosey was contemporary, we wanted to do a period piece of some sort. I can’t remember exactly how it came up, but we started talking about espionage during World War II.
That led to the idea of musicians being recruited to help in some kind of effort with the French Resistance or some group such as that. We liked the basic idea, but it still lacked that certain something that would make the story more interesting.
About a month before this brainstorming session, my niece Rachel texted me, saying it would be cool if the play took place on some sort of boat. I casually mentioned this to Dad, without any real idea of how it might fit in. But in a few moments we realized we could have this whole musician / spy plot take place on a passenger ship during World War II. Dad knew several details about this particular time in history and we then felt like we had something we would like to develop.
We usually let an idea simmer for a day or two to see if we still like it. This idea stuck and we started working on it.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjODu-iB8y5Sb8fHJUerfOF0STfG62xL4lqEyvb6NRLpTmhN3or5v4UKByh2y-Qjb_yn2c1melBlqhO1SCIsSwr860JT3Ved2UPwFavjpZl3kM4CZbqXAZbMQwEua3yFoBB7KQjVllucWE/s320/Tor3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688355998317927154" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivXicynvgkqboLAisNIdymOYzH0uj5qq0d-SXe3D6-Y3v3Iaf_LZSfQDdHzeGjdUrt_3RxskjM0B5Tjx6D237xWV9GXO1xI36JtMu3T3aPrhJnLjDTt0hpcvY2qQpzhJ351Jqa3hV729k/s320/Tor4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688355999331290482" />
Next, we started trying to come up with an outline, based primarily on what would be interesting settings. The first image that came to mind was the deck—where the passengers would be looking out over the ocean. A ballroom of some sort came to mind. We even talked about something happening up in the “crow’s nest” or in the engine room, but those didn’t stick. For a while, we debated about the bridge, but it ended up remaining in the play.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgvBab8fT1a50PRma296xi2EZLkwTLkQb1JsUWkfXHngYTvvVesOsuwrZQ7lAy3_UlJat1U0zBaSf7XzFmtBcCEGC-y23BP7HbL96UnMlWNiP_1T5l9J1WXT_46ew9WC4mq8FqYFg7pi0/s320/Tor5.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688355995834185442" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZfYZVYzDGI7igf6bEpjNQu22TX-MUerYgaZVcSxOEtQFQfp9WKUUkNYbc_Gn_DYFIea4ZlTQqYLPDgqVBbheio69-b2CdOasjl9PoyOurEHvDfGGg2PjhTgyFQd8nONwqtGl-nZxF9_Q/s320/Tor6.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688355729325802098" />
It wasn’t long before we thought of having a side plot taking place in a submarine. It was called the S.S. Athenia, named after a Greek goddess. We called our ship the S.S. Since we would both be limited on time, we decided to use royalty free music for the scene changes. He would focus primarily on the sound effects we would need. I gave him a list and he went to work, often emailing me samples of what he had developed. It was all very cool and added a great deal to the realism of the production.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsowBfOcjQm-V_ZuMVNfUSwDhpB24LJJsRWfyeDVgpmfbruGiXfq3i86RVmkUhbY3Xr_PLRQ8HLckAS8bdiMQGc9ST9EFsef-uobMMZTxsis0bWeIR9t93nCKU3i9mvfub5JIQcXYZuIU/s320/Tor29.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688354123210780434" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUK0fT_N_XIR1Cv0RRyHARswE5lhrKppVCtTI1E_xu8JzPABgIZqC0VH8ll9As2nyrnnUP7bG8CTIMsABcpgT_M7JU8_oX3Wbl6PNE78IZieULuDiASWtpzuwCB0TQN_DaBS1bv45lZe8/s320/Tor30.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688354115968631906" />
THE SONGS
For the two songs, I tried to focus on the general feel of music from that period (late 1930s, early 1940s)—songs that I like in particular, such as “What’ll I Do” and “It Had to Be You.” Using these basic rhythms as a guide, I came up with the tune for “Lost at Sea.” I think the realization that we would be using an accordion influenced the tune of “Farewell.” To me, it made me think of a Scottish type of song. One night, I started going over the basic idea of the tunes and wrote the lyrics.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj52oj1qTIzBm2PWT5vMCtO8m6nl6TYXru0tMps73cd3mpTRQoCSQUVRVJcbRbMAm2WnV6_4KzML0q0SGIP3KrWG66oZ2-uoADILGH6BZuYUH_oK3ony2YVhUaV8oFYWIJTRENvVuta4Vg/s320/Tor31.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688353814404946114" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMmP-ZfmF9QLDXaYhZdYNzVO2oKRz4AZbc1uNnOYPGfvXAhbqPPJpYZYBWpL-Tq0MeypQa6CW7_vQP52NTUsBmuUucgvjCeu1_bCc0lhaEVFBMx0-coPtkM9bIzNdwSVVrI81z2bu9LHY/s320/Tor32.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688353812428679890" />
THE SET
Clark Woodfin put in many, many hours, working on the set. Dan Murphy was an incredible resource, not only providing an essential wall on the stage, but the submarine itself. The submarine was built on top of one of the cafeteria tables and lined with cardboard. The hatch was made from an old cardboard barrel.
The primary wall onstage had to be extremely stable. That meant flats wouldn’t be good enough. Dan put up drywall and Clark added to it. It was important that the actors be able to lean on the wall in order to make it look like the ship was tilting in the climactic scene.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0h9nNcZUERgILMAGPTMfB19dzx6jLRfOFIUHDfmL5W8y7CXfHIADQ5uAGCDqFaGo_EmqYUkxwUr-PiGfDEZj_FphhH01VJ2zRjz_Z-LcUbNzIZ0PUg-Cmns8CpVSCIagUqFOvqGUn6Gc/s320/Tor33.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688353807677901906" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJQ78o7Vcrmlgow8aPmvjp5OdLufnlFT8u6tRz7bMEJFGNmncyW9jbQIQSxA6yoXsAIMD0KcOyuGhXXUQxZNpnfbi3U4JaYG-Rzd8sanjq-CMgt-r6TpbzNUokw0ZTMHOTKFr98O2He1Y/s320/Tor34.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688353777997026434" />
THE SPECIAL EFFECTS
In January, I asked Scott Anderson if he would be available to help us with the special effects for the play. He has helped us often, through years, going clear back to his help with the sword fight in “Green Eggs and Hamlet.”
I told Scott, in this play we would need to drag someone across the stage to suggest that a ship was sinking and that the room was tilting. With Larry Grampp’s help, Scott set up a pulley system that would drag Clark as needed and also drag several chairs. We had a lot of trouble getting the cart to cooperate—to roll in a straight line. The pictures and vases moved by means of fishing line. We practiced that scene many, many times. We used the distraction of the chairs moving to provide a few moments for Clark to hook himself up to the cable. When we first started testing this particular effect, the carpet on the stage was not conducive to dragging Clark. Eventually, we ended up laying down sheets of plastic on the stage to make it more drag-friendly.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhCiAp_seAJgWHDzoK7HbsL2LmcjWYvBiKsyUlOnbb6RtHttyqiMOhEcgQh1dWnaUMcwShsqxsz3I1zJE05iqRU4Pgj-DrCGCW9I04ECpkUCQb9ESvy_RgWhY3LibZtAA38O9F0Dkm-sg/s320/Tor35.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688353773416620562" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnJ9HSXE5W0WdflrDhSnCfN_MZAUbswJvEbVqdCVJR-DfgRQuhJS5O504C7bZ3rhiF8vSCXPKFXqtoFh_dT4DAJdTYwSeCCiRvqHP4MJ86Q_ctr8fkc8gc9slxWgbTB_rEhyCFzhc3Hms/s320/Tor36.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688353403014998914" />
THE FINAL RESULT
Due to the numerous sick actors and the complexity of the production, more than once we had some doubts about being able to pull off the whole thing.
